Dans la série des grandes fresques hollywodiennes adaptant les grandes oeuvres littéraires ou les grands mythes, ce film est une très bonne surprise. On reste très agréablement surpris, encore aujourd'hui, de la débauche de moyens de ce film : décors (même si Moscou manque d'ampleur), costumes, reconstitutions de batailles (une retraite de Russie terrible). C'est du grand art mais qui ne serait rien sans une interprétation au cordeau d'où émergent les trois figures majeures : Mel Ferrer, Henry Fonda et surtout Audrey Hepburn qui illumine ce film par sa candeur et sa fraîcheur. Tout sonne juste même si l'adaptation et toujours un peu la trahison d'un livre. Un très beau film.
La bande son est assez moyenne et aurait gagné à être restaurée. ( )
