"The Heralds of Valdemar are the kingdom's ancient order of protectors. They are drawn from all across the land, from all walks of life, and at all ages--and all are Gifted with abilities beyond those of normal men and women. They are Mindspeakers, FarSeers, Empaths, ForeSeers, Firestarters, FarSpeakers, and more. These inborn talents--combined with training as emissaries, spies, judges, diplomats, scouts, counselors, warriors, and more--make them indispensable to their monarch and realm. Sought and Chosen by mysterious horse-like Companions, they are bonded for life to these telepathic, enigmatic creatures. The Heralds of Valdemar and their Companions ride circuit throughout the kingdom, protecting the peace and, when necessary, defending their land and monarch. Now, nineteen authors ride with Mercedes Lackey to her magical land of Valdemar, adding their own unique voices to the Heralds, Bards, Healers, and other heroes of this beloved fantasy realm." -- Page [4] of cover.… (more)

The annual anthology of Valdemar stories brings back several writers from the last few years to continue working on storylines they have going in this setting. It was nice to see the continuation of these characters and not have them in peril. The final story is by Mercedes, and it is a standalone story with a Herald in Karse. For the most part the collection is entertaining and if you are happy visiting different settings in the Valdemar universe then you will be happy to read this one.

An excellent collection for the Valdemar Canon. All good with many, a cut above. ( )

Universally problem, solution, good feelies. Very little in the way of complications in these very short stories. ( )

The annual Valdemar anthology. More good stories than meh. Returning characters and some new ones. Scattered around the timeline. I like Ms. Lackey's story, of the time when Vkandis was becoming more active, but before Solaris was Son of the Sun. ( )

The usual mix - mostly good ones this time, only one that truly confused me (the blind Karsite...who knew what and why shifts around a lot). The first lot is mostly romances - some where the romance is the solution and some where the solution allows the romance. Then the serials, which since I missed the last book are as confusing as usual, though some good stories (or parts of same). And ends with some I think standalones, including Lackey's story - most of those are very good (though the blind Karsite is one of these). ( )
