Inspired by Victoria Kelly's experiences as the wife of a fighter pilot during three wartime deployments, this collection follows women whose lives have been impacted by war and military service as they struggle with their fragile ideas of home.  In "Prayers of an American Wife," a Navy wife grapples with loneliness when she discovers that her neighbor, also a Navy wife, is having an affair while their husbands are deployed on the same aircraft carrier. Tensions rise in "The Strangers of Dubai" as a soldier on leave tries to buy his wife a souvenir from an Afghan vendor. After attending eight funerals with fellow military wives whose husbands died in the Iraq war, the protagonist in "Finding the Good Light" divorces her Navy husband and tries to start a new life as a movie star. These, along with the eleven other stories in this collection, explore the emotional landscape of the resilient women who remain on the homefront. Kelly's stories offer readers an intimate, eye-opening look into the sacrifices and steadfastness of military family members.  … (more)

If you like collections of short stories, this could be a book for you. This was a quick read, with stories all loosely connected to the military. It wasn't my favorite, and I wouldn't re-read it, but it passed the time.

I received a free copy of this book through the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program in exchange for my honest review.

I did finally get a copy, after chasing down publishers. I cannot wait for the new system to come out for reviews. Until then, I’m sure I’d rate this book just a half star higher if it wasn’t for the inability to send out materials, but it wasn’t a terrible read. I’m still not convinced about the central theme of the book —- the thing that brings all these stories together. But just like another collection of stories or works, there are some very highly successful, so terrible ones but most are okay. Just okay.

i was due to receive Homefront: Stories Victoria Kelly in the March 2024 Batch or Early Reviewers. i never received it. i reached out to social media, got one response on facebook chat, but they never sent it beyond receipt of the message. doesn't look like anyone got it, so i doubt they are a real service.
