Alex Cross is a homicide detective with a Ph.D. in psychology. He works and lives in the ghettos of D. C. and looks like Muhammad Ali in his prime. He's a tough guy from a tough part of town who wears Harris Tweed jackets and likes to relax by banging out Gershwin tunes on his baby grand piano. But he also has two adorable kids of his own, and they are his own special vulnerabilities.
Jezzie Flanagan is the first woman ever to hold the highly sensitive job as supervisor of the Secret Service in Washington. Blond, mysterious, seductive, she's got an outer shell that's as tough as it is beautiful. She rides her black BMW motorcycle at speeds of no less than 100 mph. What is she running from? What is her secret?
Alex Cross and Jezzie Flanagan are about to have a forbidden love affair-at the worst possible time for both of them. Because Gary Soneji, who wants to commit the "crime of the century," is playing at the top of his game. Soneji has outsmarted the FBI, the Secret Service, and the police. Who will be his next victim?
Gary Soneji is every parent's worst nightmare. He has become Alex Cross's nightmare. And now, reader, he's about to become yours.

In the first of the series, Alex Cross, African-American forensic psychologist and detective, and partner, Sampson, are trying to solve some brutal murders in the Black section of Washington, D.C., along with the kidnapping of two children, the son of the Secretary of the Treasury and the daughter of a famous actress. They are working with the Secret Service and the FBI. The children are taken by a teacher at their school, Gary Soneji/Murphy in broad daylight. A ransom of 10 million dollars is asked for which Alex Cross is tapped to deliver in Florida. The book follows Alex's efforts to solve the crime and apprehend Gary Soneji/Murphy, a psychopath and a possible multiple personality, along with any accomplices. Along the way he has a relationship with Jezzi Flanagan, a Secret Service supervisor. Just as you think to have a handle on who did it and why, the plot takes off in a different direction. ( )

It's no good. I didn't enjoy it. I raced through it and turned the pages readily enough. The book was well-written and well-plotted. But there was too much plot. I became irritated when - yet again - a twist was dropped into the mix. Many of the characters were cardboard: his side-kick; his children, who always appeared as a single entity, apparently joined at the hip. It was just ..... not for me. ( )

Unfortunatley I saw the movie first so it took me a while to get this book. I did read and had to read twice before I could really understand it. Only because if you don't pay attention you could really miss out. this was an awesome book and I would recommend this writer to anyone who loves mystery. ( )
