Fen is just chick lit but it's a charming example of the genre.

It is the second book in a series about three sisters, so the central character is familiar to the reader and some of the back story has already been established.

Freya North has a unique voice - a dreamy introspective, almost stream of consciousness style. When I first read one of her books, I was irritated by the fact that it was written in present tense. It works however, with Freya North's style, to create characters that feel truely vibrant to the reader.

It also makes for surprisingly erotic sex scenes.

This isn't a gritty, realistic novel. The characters are idealised (if quirky), and the boy-meets girl happy ending was set up early in the novel. It would irritate readers looking for great substance, but is a nice escapist, comforting read for young women wanting a happy endng.

I'd recommend it to my sister but not to my mum. ( )
