"Do you know that house?" I said, pointing to the residencia. The gaunt peasant, who had just told me he had much frequented these mountains in former years, looked at me darkly and crossed himself. "Too well," he said. "It was there that one of my comrades sold himself to Satan; the Virgin shield us from temptation He has paid the price and is now burning in the reddest place in Hell " He then spoke words that had the ring of prophecy, leaving me shaking with terror. A fun little gothic novella. There are some beautiful, picturesque scenes that unfold on the page and some truly eccentric characters. I quite enjoyed it, though I was surprised that the title character wasn't introduced until half way through.

I'll stop there for fear of spoilers, but it's worth a read. ( )

A short vampire novella from the author of the Treasure Island. Was a bit too oldstyle and romantic for my taste. ( )

It's been a while since I have read Stevenson and I had forgotten what his style was like... Maybe it was just my mood but I found it very hard to focus on his longish sentences and flowery style. ( )

I've never heard of this story before and randomly found the audiobook (great way to get reading done while walking the dog). I'm glad I found it. Another story from R.L.S. and this time with a little vampire action. ( )
