As per the author's description, this is not a history, nor is it strictly a biography, it is rather a book-length essay on the role of science and technology and their practitioners in a post-Hiroshima world. The lives and careers of von Neumann and Wiener are contrasted as part of Heims' argument, which boils down to a post-modern holism rejecting the exceptionalism of science. The discussion on game theoretic approaches to nuclear deterrence made me think of the current debate about bias in machine learning and data science. ( )
