Dr. Nuland is an extraordinary guide through some of the biggest discoveries and advancements in medical history. He is one one the best lecturers I have listened to in the Great Courses. Sadly, he passed away at age 84 in 2014, but listening to him in this course recorded perhaps ten years earlier, he sounds like a young man. If you can deal with some of the visceral aspects of this--autopsies, reports of vivisection, disgusting diseases--you'll be enlightened (and entertained). Highly recommended. ( )

In a series of lectures the author explores the progress of medicine through the ages. Very interesting listening. ( )

A brief survey of the history of scientific medicine as revealed through personal biographers of the doctors themselves, including: the HIppocratics, Galen, Vesalius, William Harvey, Morgagni, Hunter, Laennec, Morton, Virchow, Lister, Halsted, and Taussig. Lively and interesting, and quite revealing. ( )
