Strong start and lots of good stuff in the mix. But keeping twelve staff members distinct as characters was a stumbling block. Our heroine is a little indistinct at times too. She seems zippy and flirty but has grown children which is possible but you need to sell me. I did like the explanation of all the conflicting reports of villany. ( )

Dandy goes undercover as a lady's maid in an Edinburgh townhouse to investigate the death of the master of the house. Not a single servant has a single nice thing to say about their late master and instead seem relieved at his passing. Dandy has to investigate the murder while not breaking her cover as a maid. ( )

Story only fair and characters uninvolving--even the main characters, let alone the secondary ones. ( )

Enjoyable. I needed to read her earlier adventures first. ( )

Readers still adore Agatha Christie and long for a successor. Ruth Rendell and P.D. James are far too free with the blood and realism. Into the vacuum comes Catriona McPherson and Dandelion Dahlia Gilver, known as Dandy, a gentlewoman of middle years, intelligent, rich, aristocratic, married and free to take on little puzzles. Lollie Balfour of Edinburgh is being terrorized by her husband. She is followed, accused of perverse habits, her mail opened, her life threatened. She asks for Dandy’s help and the only way in is for Dandy to work as Lollie’s lady’s maid, a job for which Dandy is spectacularly ill-suited. Dandy arrives, and within hours the body drops and the puzzle begins. This one is full of clever twists.

Book description
Welcome to Edinburgh, 1926. Dandy Gilver, a wealthy and witty aristocrat (and sometimes amateur sleuth) receives a letter from Lollie Balfour, who insists that her husband of five years is having her followed and her mail is being steamed open.

The only way for Dandy to help is by pretending to applying for a job as a lady’s maid in Lollie’s house. Dandy gets a crash course from her own maid and arrives at 31 Heriot Row, ready to put all of her detection skills to good use. Why does Mr. Balfour want to get rid of his wife? And can Dandy stay in disguise long enough to evade the villains?
