Austin Ripley

These vest-pocket mysteries rely on a careful reading of the text. There's no hidden tricks, and the author plays fair. You just have to read the mysteries carefully in order to unravel them. And that's why, in no small measure, after 90 years the mysteries still hold up. Ripley did a very good job with these, and they hold up better than the contemporary "Baffle Books," which often rely on dated clues. Recommended.

I can't resist books like this one, which I think is the original. I'm a little better at solving the now than I was when I first probably picked this up as an 8 year old.
