The author is a professional writer but not a specialist in the history of the period; however his book is useful for including material from the then-recent archaeological studies of shipwrecks linked to the Armada, chiefly off the coast of Ireland. Like some other recentlv writers, he is fairly sympathetic to Medina-Sidonia, though not to Phiiip II who in his view bombarded his commanders with inconsistent and unrealistic orders.
