John Rossiter

Alex Shutler wakes one morning to find himself in a hospital bed and without any memory who he is or what happened to him. His wife seems angry at him; his doctor says he is suffering from amnesia from a car accident. At first he is told his wife was the driver but soon he learns he was and he was intoxicated and he hit & killed two elderly pedestrians.

In the mean time, in his mind he is suddenly transported into WW II and thinks he is Flight-Lieutenant Andrew Silby. When he goes to the show more police department for help, they can find some of the details are real but the murder of two people he thinks he committed in 1944 can not be substantiated. The narrative swings between WW II with Silby's battles in the air against the Luftwaffe and the present with Shulter's confusion and disintegrating marriage.

The story takes on another world tone when Shulter tracks down the woman Silby loved in 1944. He (Shulter) becomes Silby for an evening and the woman Brenda believes he is Silby. show less
