This is not terrible, but on the bad end of the scale for a VSI - however, how much that is just due to the subject matter is debatable. Some topics have more logical bounds than others. Here we get a brief background on the rise of the short story as print media changed, the explosion of popular magazines and periodicals, how more literary forms began to exist in a sea of pulp, all good stuff. Then it gets very scattershot, using a lot of namedropping and musing on the form of the short show more story, something about the expectations and subversion and some famous implementations (Chekov). But it doesn't really follow a logical structure, and being a short overview there's not enough depth to really discuss the changing form with enough examples. show less
