I picked this up to see if I could use it as a Spirit Play story (I won't), and felt it was important to have my child read. This seemed so pertinent in light of today's top news story, about a kidnapping that probably could have been discovered had the victim not remained silent for so long.
This Korean folktale is brief and to the point (as folk tales tend to be). Message: Someone with malicious intent may lure you far away from safety with promises of treats aplenty (the spider and the show more fly story all over), but if you play along and gain the trust of your captor, you may cleverly escape. show less

"A manual for young helpers that is fun to look at and filled with useful things that are easy to do. Small children will want to emulate Marian Parry's cheerful mice as they go about their daily chores."
The story is partly told in plain text, and partly by comic-strip style illustrations with dialogue and small jokes. Simple ink drawings, tinted with red and blue.
Appealing to kindergarten and grade 1 children who are beginning to read, and who can take pride in the grown-up ways they can show more help around the house.
Not great literature, but very useful both for early readers and for teaching young helpers. show less
