The book looks at two different tragedies that occurred in Armenia and Azerbaijan in 1988. The first was the ethnic tensions between the two then Soviet republics over the Armenian region of Nagorny Karabakh in Azerbaijan. It looks at the creation of a movement, the massacre of Armenians in Sumgait and the response. The second part looks at the effects of the Armenian earthquake and the rescue efforts. It is a slice of life that even now is gone. I found it interesting and intriguing show more although the first part can be difficult to sort out. It is also clear that it was written in another language and then translated into English, although not much is lost so that shouldn't be seen as too big of an issue. Overall an interesting look of a particular time and place. show less
