For fans of baseball and comics, it doesn’t get much better than this collection of Shoe comic strips written and drawn by the great Jeff MacNelly.
MacNelly was a huge fan of the National Pastime, and especially so of his beloved Chicago Cubs. He was a die-hard Cubs fan, even though they never won a World Series during his lifetime. For those of you who don’t know, the Cubs went 108 years between championships. The frustration of rooting for a perennial losing club comes through in some show more laugh-out-loud strips when the Perfesser, Skyler, and Shoe sit in the bleachers watching the Cubs. MacNelly’s love of the game provides the foundation for all the strips presented here. Skyler on the mound are some of my all-time favorites.
There are 124 pages, most of which contain two strips.
I’m not a Cubs fan, but I love the game, and this book really made me smile. show less

This interesting collection of cartoons makes for a quick, easy read. Some of them are funny, but a some fall flat. A few even feel mean-spirited. On the whole, it’s worth reading, but don’t expect too much.
This strip about a group of talking birds, remarkably human in their personalities and endeavors, is nicely satirical and cynical without too sharp an edge. And it's usually pretty funny. The title about describes my own stage of life.
Contradictions are the rule, not the exception in this slim volume. Some are really funny, like the baby grand cartoon, while others sort of stretch the point. All the oxymorons are illustrated, and will likely elicit a smile or chuckle as you peruse them.
