Like all of Graley's work, this comic is absolutely adorable, funny, and heartwarming. Donut is a villain who wants to go to hero school - it's hard enough breaking convention, as her parents are renown evildoers, but now her "best friend" Ivy is trying her hardest to ruin Donut's time at hero school in order to get her back on the villainous path. Donut is caring, hardworking, and totally determined to be the best hero she can be and it's just SO CUTE. This could definitely become a series show more and I really hope it does! Graley's comics have become a great source of feel-good-semi-spooky-fun and I need her to never stop creating. show less
Comics can be tough to talk about without giving too much away, so I wanted to do something different this time. I’ve compiled a quick list of all the things I love about the comic (spoiler: it’s basically everything).
+ The art style – I won’t read a graphic novel or comic if I don’t like the art style. I started out following Graley on Tumblr and Instagram, so I already knew I loved her style. This has the same cutesy style, but Kim has more edge than Graley’s autobiographical show more comics. Also, the faces her characters make are perfect and hilarious. I want them to be emojis for my phone. Also, there’s a lot of purple used in the coloring and I fully approve.
+ The characters – Kim is badass and cute and sassy and also sometimes a colossal idiot. Becka is positive and grounded and also cute and keeps cookies in her bed for snacking! The reapers are snarky and adorable. Also, there are lots of cats!
+ Lesbian (bi?) rep – Becka and Kim are 100% adorable together. It’s not really mentioned whether or not either one is bi, but I don’t want to flat-out say they aren’t.
+The fashion – Kim and Becka both have some outfits I’d love to own, but my favorite is Kim’s shirt with the skulls on her boobs.
+ The plot – I love modern fantasy and a college (or, uni, as Graley is English) student working part-time as a reaper is right up my alley. The events in the book are ridiculous and fun and I can’t wait to see what else lives in the universe Graley created. Plus, there are some emotional beats that gave me some nice feels.
If you’re looking for a modern take on a college-aged grim reaper, with a f/f relationship and feel-good vibes, then check out Kim Reaper! I will certainly be buying volume 2 when it’s released later this year! show less

Freaping adorable!
(Full disclosure: I received a free electronic ARC for review through NetGalley.)
Becka is totally crushing on the goth girl at school, black-clad, purple-haired Kim. What Becka doesn't know - that is, until she inadvertently follows Kim through a portal and interrupts a cat reaping* - is that Kim wields a scythe and is the only human reaper in employ down in hell. Can their budding romance survive Kim's super-intense, yet just part-time job? How about a buff cat guy high on show more energy drinks? One of the girls' death-dates? A zombie apocalypse? Yes, this all transpires in a mere 114 pages, and it is as weird and wonderful as it sounds.
Kim Reaper is, in a word, freaping adorable. Okay, that's two, but Kim would excuse me. Becka and Kim make a cute as heck couple, and the bizarre obstacles that inexplicably pop up in their path will just have you rooting for them all the more. I mean, two cute girls? One of them a reaper? Crushing on each other, kicking ass, reaping souls? What's not to love?!?
Also, some of the over-the-top emotional panels are reminiscent of the Sarah's Scribbles series, which only ups its cool quotient imho.
The only odd thing is that the writing feels a little young - like tweeny - even though the girls - err, women - are in university. It has the vibe of a middle grade story with a YA/New Adult cast.
* Bonus points for imparting a sort of personhood to nonhuman animals, even though it probably wasn't meant as a political statement or anything.

Love these books! So many kitties! So adorable! I just can't get enough!! Squee!! More comics about the couple's four cats, their relationship and going to the next level plus the fun things they do. Great art and funny comic strips.
