Sarah Andersen’s Fangs tells the love story between a vampire and her werewolf boyfriend through a series of vignettes. Andersen draws upon the mythology of both creatures of the night, filtering it through her unique style and twenty-first-century life. For example, Elsie is a grown-up who retains her love for goth/emo fashion while having developed a more sophisticated style. Jimmy, the werewolf, is a hipster and recalls the heckin’ doggo memes online in some of his behavior. The show more result is something unique in vampire fiction that’s cute and sweet, delivering just the right notes of cozy horror for those who enjoy the genre. show less
'''Go make stuff!''
I don't know what it is about Andersen's creations that make me feel so excited. Is it the cute girl with the big eyes, hungry to understand the paranoia around her? The modern, unassuming style? The honest way in which she approaches the problematizations depicted in her sketches? The sensitivity in which she describes a difficult reality? I don't know. Whatever it is, I always find myself reading her work with utter enthusiasm, eagerly waiting for the next show more installment.
There were so many times that I was reminded of myself when reading 'Herding Cats.'' The sketch with the brain walking down the trail of Bad Thought? That is totally me...and the feeling of Halloween approaching once August ends...and the sad, soul-crushing music.... and the overthinker... and the quadruple checking of the stove..
I deeply appreciated Sarah's views on the potentially disastrous effects of exposing yourself on the Internet, especially when your effort is successful and the trolls start galloping from the dark recesses of their despair. I think most of can relate to this, most of us have an experience or two to narrate...
...and this is what I consider quality escapism that provides an opportunity for some serious thinking.....

When it comes to rating collections of comics it seems like there are only three choices for me: 1, 3, or 5 stars. I either really understand and appreciate them, I could take them or leave them, or I didn't connect with them. Herding Cats from Sarah Andersen is a 5 star for me. And yes, I considered rating this a 4 just to make anyone reading this crazy.
While I am well past the age where I should still be figuring my way through this world (theoretically anyway) I am still able to connect show more with both the warm fuzzies (usually involving pets) and the frustration at society's seemingly contradictory norms. Sarah brings these into focus so we can both laugh at/with them and know we are not alone in the world in trying to understand these things.
I would highly recommend this to anyone familiar with her work in print or online, as well as anyone who enjoys comics that poke fun at the sometimes insane things we all deal with on a daily basis.

There are many fabulous and funny web-comic artists out there, but do any speak to us millennial ladies quite as perfectly as Sarah’s Scribbles? Her cartoon alter ego is the perfect blend of cute, weird, and just-this-side-of-insane that it’s impossible not to see ourselves reflected as we giggle over her self-immolizing adventures. In this second collection we see Sarah throw her money away on books (shut up, there are worse addictions to have), get caught by the latest ear-worm tune show more (hyperfixation - never met her), and admit that life is far more complicated on the insides of our heads than the curated versions that we parade through the world. Did I mention that she totally gets our obsession with our pets? Yeah, our furbabies are number one, and that’s how we like it! While her comics definitely poke fun at herself and find the humorous side of life, I heartily appreciate the depth that she also reveals. Exploring themes such as self-criticism and -doubt while still coming out the other side with a laugh definitely makes us feel like we’re not so alone in this great wide world, and keeps her work from the potential critique of being too fluffy. Though we always appreciate some moments of fluff - especially if they come in the form of amusing crushes, soft kitties, or a wild mane of hair that just can’t be tamed! If Sarah can own her true self, so can we! show less
