There was some beauty in the art, specifically in the representation of the sea, and I think the cover is beautiful. I didn't really care for the drawing of the main character, though.
Where the story really fell apart for me is the reprehensible attitude of the main character. I'll give a certain amount of leeway to a character who has suffered loss, but there's a point where you're just being a spoiled asshole.

That Salty Air is a graphic novel that has a simplistic story line with a moral message. Our main character, Hugh, is a fisherman who provides for himself and his wife by catching fish. They live a simple life in a small cottage that is set by the sea. Hugh is at good terms, with mother nature, or mother sea in this case, until he receives some devastating news. The result? He takes out his anger on the sea for taking away something he loves.
Not only does this novel show a great depiction of show more the circle of life in the sea, but it also sends a good message that revenge is never the answer. And you know how they say what comes around goes around? Karma always comes back to bite you in the butt. Other than the story’s moral message, I also thoroughly enjoyed the artwork style. My only regret is that I wished the book was longer and we got to see more character backgrounds and interactions. show less

Its spare and a quick read. I like a story where octopi have a prominent role. One of the main characters flies into a rage after losing his mother. I've never been a rager and always find it a little stupid and hard identify with. I'm a brooder, which isn't any better, and is probably just as alien to some. I still find it hard to sympathize with and that brought the story down for me.

Sad story of a drunk fisherman. Besot with grief over his mother's death, he takes out his anger on the ocean--but the ocean demands its due. Still not quite sure why his wife would offer herself in his place--surely there are greater causes for duty and sacrifice than an unloving marriage.
