The first volume of the Aliens omnibus collection contains 5 original comics; Outbreak, Nightmare Asylum, Female War, Theory of Alien Propagation, and The Alien. Of these only the first two are noteworthy. The last two are only about 10-15 pages each, in which not much happens, but the first two are 100+ pages each with extensive stories. Nightmare Asylum in particular is beautiful, with highly detailed art that is light years beyond the typical stuff you see in most comic books. It's worth show more reading just for the visuals alone. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Female War, which was just completely terrible in every way imaginable. Uninteresting art, poor storytelling, weak characters. It's just bad, and really bogged down the collection as a whole.
Overall the Omnibus is alright. If you liked the Alien movies, this definitely expands the lore significantly, and in a much better way than that Prometheus movie. *ahem* Beyond that, it's not super impressive, other than Nightmare Asylum. show less

Wow.
I have no idea what happened but after a decent start and a strong second issue, this book went off the rails in the third issue.
But this? The final one? As much as I adore Joe R. Lansdale's writing—and I truly do, I've read damn near everything he's written—this one utterly shit the bed.
And I've gotta say, if you're the author of a comic book series, and the artist actually inserts your image into the storyline as a character, you really only want that to happen in a story that show more makes sense and comes to some fitting conclusion. Joe, this was not the storyline to get yourself inserted into. show less

My boyfriend lent me this book. We are both very into the Alien franchise and I must say that this omnibus is pretty fantastic. The art is cool and while the first stories are rather formulaic, it definitely gets better as the omnibus goes. I am greatly looking forward to reading the next volumes!!
Hmmmm...not quite sure what to think of this one yet.
It's got the trademark Lansdale humour in it (if you've read his Hap & Leonard novels, you'll know exactly what I mean), but then it's got some seriously gruesome horror in it as well.
I think, so far, I'm enjoying the writing more than I am Nelson's artwork, but with three issues to go, we'll see if that changes.
