The book helps one understand two main issues in bridge construction: the weaknesses of using cast iron and the lack of good quality checking at all aspects of bridge building. It clearly makes one understand the issues around stress and loading of structures. The detail does get a bit overwhelming so I was skimming a bit toward the end. This is the first book I have seen on a bridge failure occurring this early with photographs of the failure and shows the flange breaking clearlly. This is show more not a casual read. show less
