Rails in the fells; a railway case study: an account of the origins, characteristics and contribution of a railway to the landscape; together with an attempt to evaluate its past and present influence on the area through which it passes by David Jenkinson
A very different railway book. Whilst there are plenty of pictures of trains and descriptions of the line, the bulk of the book is an exposition of the geography and geology of the area and how that affected the planning, course and construction of the line. It then takes a long hard look at the contribution of the railway to the local economy, and how that impacted on local traffic patterns. It ends with an examination of coaching stock and locomotives from an operating point of view. There show more should be more railway books like this that take a serious view of their subject; this is a textbook rather than something for the casual reader to leaf through. And none the worse for that. show less
The authors are very knowledgable and give an interesting and fully illustrated account of the development of LMS coaching stock. Some new information from the archives sheds new light on the history of the Coronation sets.A very informative and interesting read.
