"An icon is always more than an illustration. The event or person represented in an icon has a relevance far beyond the concrete situation" (100).
Solrunn Nes shows the reader, step-by-step, the process of making an icon. There is no room for creativity that is readily apparent, though I think that is probably more due to my ignorance than the actual fact. Like any type of handwriting, I'm sure there are differences in brushstroke and in the ink composition, at the very least.
As a person who show more began knowing nothing about iconography, I found the book quite interesting. Now, I would like to continue reading to learn more about the split between the Roman and Orthodox church and the role icons played in that split. show less
