Didn't love this one. It had some interesting facts about birds, but the philosophy side was overly simplistic, along the lines of nature = good / man = bad (or out of touch, or overthinking things... you get the idea). I wonder if it didn't lose a little in translation, as well, because the tone was less philosophical than vaguely scolding. Beautiful illustrations, though, and true to its title it was short.

Delightful! This would make a great gift for a nature or bird lover. The author team consists of an ornithologist/writer with world travel experience and climate change knowledge and a conservationist with a degree in literature and philosophy. The result is a well-written (and translated) thoughtful, knowledgeable "gift" book that examines human entities and constructs through a study of birds. Topics like equality, courage, love, intelligence and several more (22 total) are examined in the show more bird world through the habits and characteristics of specific species - and then compared to humans. Fascinating details and information make this a really interesting read and though quick and short, it packs a lot in there. The overall message is the importance of attunement with nature and how crucial it is to ensure all these species survive because each one has something unique to contribute to the animal kingdom (of which humans are a part). I enjoyed the ornithological information here, but the "philosophy" aspects seemed a bit simplistic. The illustrations are really lovely, though.

Want mensen zijn precies als vogels, met dezelfde vogelwensen en dezelfde vogelstreken - of was het omgekeerd? Een boekje met mijmeringen over de gelijkenissen tussen mens en vogel, eerder dan een filosofie. Voor elk vogelgedrag vind je wel een gepaste mens - of is het omgekeerd? Af en toe raken de reflecties een snaar die blijft nazinderen, zoals in het stukje over de rui. Hebben we er niet allemaal nood aan, af en toe, om ons af te zonderen en in een pijnlijk proces onze oude pluimen uit show more te trekken, om dan, als de nieuwe veren aangegroeid zijn, in volle glorie als herboren te verschijnen? Een enkele keer raken de auteurs een diepere ader, zoals in het hoofdstukje over kunst, om dan snel weer over te schakelen naar het volgende onderwerp, alsof ze bang zijn om echt filosofisch te worden. Aan het einde van de rit kijk je misschien met kraaienoogjes naar de wereld, of met de blik van een meesje balancerend op een dunne twijg. Dat is ook al heel wat. show less
