Doctoral candidates enter the programs with big plans and often bigger dreams. They frequently sail through the doctoral program - they're very familiar with the role of being a student, even when being a student requires a great deal of self-direction. When they land their first job, however, there can be many competing and perhaps conflicting messages sent like "get at least 2 publications each year" or "don't let your evaluations drop below the departmental average".
