Pairing a new author with someone more experienced in a two-story collection that focuses on place is a good idea. Unfortunately, in this case, the new writer's work suffered in comparison to that of the established writer, seeming juvenile and unpolished. I was greatly entertained by Colin MacIntyre's memoir and would happily spend more time in his company. I didn't get anything from Ellen MacAskill's novella about returning home to small town life as an out bisexual. Her main character was show more devoid of emotion but it wasn't written in a way that lifted the narrative out of dullness. I'm older and it's not my life experience, but a better writer would have taken me along with them and made me care. show less
