A slim paperback measuring 23cm x 25.5cm (9" x 10"), with 112 pages, The New Mexico Painters is illustrated in full colour throughout, with the exception of the black and white photographs of each artist. Following the introduction the individual biographies commence on page 15. Each biography includes about two or three pages of text and provides a brief background to the artist and his (her) development, and a description of his work and approach. There are fourteen artists included: Frank show more Applegate, Jozef Bakos, Gustave Bauman, Ernest L Blumenschein, Andrew Dasburg, Randal Davey, William Penhallow Henderson, Victor Higgins, Walter Mruk, B J O Nordfelt, Olive Rush, John Sloan, Walter Ufer Theodore Van Soelen.
This is an attractive publication, each artist is represented by several paintings (or in the case of Bauman, mostly woodblocks) varying from three to six or more full page images plus a few thumbnails; in total there are about 56 good size full-colour pictures plus about 45 thumbnails of which al but one are in colour; plus of course the black and white artists' photographs. The book is well laid out and the colour printing is fairly good; but perhaps the most appealing aspect of the book is that it offers some fresh examples or the artists' work, and avoids the familiar ones. show less
