The spring cleaning of my kindle continues with a new-to-me author who delivers a fast paced police procedural with great characters. It's set in Florida & follows a team of homicide detectives as they investigate a bewildering & sudden uptick in the local murder rate.
It actually begins with the killer's first strike so we know from the get-go who is responsible. Our time is split between them & the cops as they race around trying to keep up with the crime spree. The author's style makes show more for effortless reading & the pages fly by as suspense builds. Characters are well fleshed out & I enjoyed spending time with Harrington & his crew. The only "bad" news is it made me want book #2 Beset. And I wonder why my TBR pile never shrinks 🙄 show less

Book #1, in the Agent Hank Rawlings Series of FBI Thrillers
In a few words what we are getting into reading “Drained”
“A known serial killer is once again taking lives in Chicago. Bodies drained of blood are being strewn across the city. “
Sounds macabre, indeed it was.
Although this is your regular, fast-paced, crime fiction it also has its own interesting elements. I love how the story takes the catch me if you can approach and plays a tight cat and mouse game from start to finish. show more The story moves along at the steady pace, not particularly gore filled but enough to make you cringe at times. Oh yes, I kept turning pages and fast so wanting to know how long it would take Hank Rawlings, the protagonist, before he was able to put the squeeze on the serial killer. The action is play by play and very detailed. Some may say too much action spelled out can be tedious, I agree to some degree but it helps us to understand the good guys, the arrogance of the bad guy and the lifestyle of the victims.
For a FBI thriller, it was a very easy read with lots of exciting scenarios, several twists and turns not a dull moment throughout most of all we find a great set of characters to keep track of. The author’s ability to twist fear drives the story and makes it engaging. Well-done show less

Malevolent: having or showing a desire to cause harm to another person.
The cover for Malevolent by E H Reinhad is fabulous and the fact the book takes place in Tampa, Florida, only adds to the spice of murder and mystery. Any books in Florida hit a special place for me, sand, sun and surf. I love it.
The Prologue is a gripping hook!
Lieutenant Kane is thirty eight and resembles Mr Clean. The simple description makes it easy to picture him…and his cat, Butch, a hybrid between a domestic and show more wild cat. He is an interesting character all by himself, growing and developing in the story.
“Death by drill and boiling water.”
I almost wanted to puke at some of the graphic details of his murders. I love it.
We have some light hearted and fun moments and dialogue, along with the gruesome.
There were some moments when I was shrugging my shoulders, not happy with what was going on. The writing did not make this a five star read, for me, but I did read it in one sitting and I would definitely grab another opportunity to read more of E H Reinhard’s work.

Homicide Detective Carl Kane is on the hunt for a killer, starting with the murder of 3 gang member/drug dealers and 2 of their mothers.
This feels like it was made for young readers. The dialog is simple and repetitive. Such as the author writes dialog to a phone conversation, then he has Kane repeat the conversation to his partner, and then again the entire conversation is repeated for the squad captain. He could have just said " I told the captain about my phone call with the M.E."
It made show more me feel as if the author thinks his readers are too dumb to remember what was said a few pages ago.
Also he uses acronyms too often. (DB, GSW, etc.)
The story line was pretty good. I like who dunnit mysteries, this one let you know in the first chapter who was responsible. show less
