- Native Vermonter, novelist, and public radio commentator, Joseph A. Citro has done a lot to keep New England’s history and folklore alive in the popular culture. His twelve books include five novels of suspense, three volumes of historical oddities, a collection of regional humor, two travel guides, and a co-edited book of essays.
Mr. Citro’s classic and best-selling Green Mountain Ghosts, Ghouls and Unsolved Mysteries (Houghton Mifflin 1994) was the most comprehensive collection of offbeat Vermont lore ever assembled and is now in its 10th printing,
It was supplemented by Passing Strange (1996), Green Mountains, Dark Tales (1999), The Vermont Ghost Guide (2000), and Curious New England (2003).
His novels -- three of which have been optioned for motion pictures -- present a dark and mystical side of the Vermont experience. They include Shadow Child, Guardian Angels, The Gore, Lake Monsters and Deus-X.
Since 1992 his commentary series on Vermont Public Radio has featured the state's best-loved ghosts, monsters, madmen, and mysteries. He is an expert in Vermont's occult lore, including Spiritualism.
A native of Chester, Vermont, his checkered past includes a variety of jobs, from pumping gas, to landscaping, teaching English as a second language, hospitality work, counseling, and working in state government. As he says, "I was a bureaucrat, and it drove me crazy. But you’ve got to be crazy to take up writing."
Since becoming a professional writer in 1987, he has taught in local colleges, lectured widely, and appeared on regional and national radio and television. A video based on his collection of Vermont oddities is currently in the works. His audio book, Joe Citro’s WEIRD VERMONT was released in September 2003.

Synopsis: A creepy and mysterious collection of historical accounts of curses that destroyed people, places, and objects around New England. The author researched and found a collection of tales from old Yankee folklore and brings them to life. At the same time, he let's the reader decide for himself whether to believe that things were simple bad luck or words uttered to cause harm.
I recognized some of the tales from Maine - the curse of the Desert of Maine and the curse put on the Saco show more River. The author included tales from Native American lore, coastal ship wreck curses, and curses brought on by witches.
The book was so engaging that I stayed up until 2 AM reading it - and then couldn't sleep because I was creeped out! Definitely recommended for those who enjoy supernatural tales and those familiar with New England. show less

I was a little disappointed by this novel, as I was looking forward to an exploration into a amateur cryptozoologist searching for the mythical Champ of Lake Champlain. However, Harrison, the main protagonist, hardly, if ever, looks for the creature that he claims to be fascinated by. Instead a much different approach is taken, and it was very distracting due to my interest in what I thought this novel would be about. However, I will not let this disappointment effect the review.
Harrison, a show more middle-aged man who's trying to find himself, has recently gained a chance to live on Friars Island, where he is going to start a search for Champ. Along the way, he gets sidetracked by the island's history and a possible love interest.
Not at all what I expected, but well researched and interesting, so I'll give it four stars out of five. show less

If you've read other Citro books (like Passing Strange), this will be right up your alley. Seventeen stories from all over New England regarding curses put on properties, families, etc. (most from the 1800's) and how some of these hexes may still be in the works today . . . cool stuff!
"This was my first Joe Citro book. I liked it enough to read another of his books. There were one or two gaps in the story, I thought, but it moved right along and kept my interest."
