Islam is going through paths: those open to those who - dissatisfied with the formalism of established religion - sought a more personal and intense approach to the Divine. Paths, then, of strong mystical imprint, but which, as their followers grew, had to be endowed with criteria of organization, identity signs and a symbolic universe of their own. In this way, those known in the West emerged as brotherhoods, notable instruments of socialization and, in some cases, political and economic powers. At present, it would be impossible to know, not the religiosity, but even the social and political life of the Islamic world without referring to the fraternities. The paths of Allah is the first exhaustive study of Sufism and its social embodiment, the brotherhoods: their origin, growth and ramifications; its doctrines, organization and rituals; its geographic locations - from China to the Maghrib, through the Balkans, Indonesia and sub-Saharan Africa - and current implementation; its relations with politics and religious powers, the past and especially the present. Likewise, it studies in particular some brotherhoods, the most relevant for their territorial expansion, number of followers or social influence. show less
