The beginning reader genre needs more books like this featuring kids of color. Seven Black kids of varying shades each declare "I am born to be awesome!" and go on to list the things and activities they love that make them awesome. It ends with a question for the reader: "What ways are you awesome?" Nothing too corny or babyish to put off a worldly new reader; it's kids expressing the kinds of things all kids would say.

Sweet illustrations showing girls and flowers, with positive affirmations. Not all of the text really makes sense, there are some pages where the metaphors are a bit of a stretch, but it is beautiful to look at and conveys a generally positive vibe.

I loved this book and think it would be awesome in a classroom. Teaching diversity is so important, and I think this book did an amazing job of portraying appreciation for all hair types.
