Fascinating account, taken mostly from letters and diaries and other contemporary accounts, of the little-known missionary efforts of Connecticut Congregationalism, and some observations about why may have Congregationalism fared as it did numerically in the post-Revolutionary western "frontier".

Written by a Presbyterian, it's a sympathetic and clear-eyed look at a time and group of men almost unrecognizably different in their worldview to modern religious people.

Congregationalism is show more fascinating anyway, and their struggles with the challenges of the rapid expansion westward, as well as the encroachment everywhere of Baptist and Methodist "circuit-riders" and other itinerant and lay preachers, is almost poignant. show less
