A good book to help you plan where you want to go or to read up on history and culture, but not a lot of practical information--very few maps, limited restaurant and hotel information. A good book to check out from the library to read over, but buy the Lonely Planet guide to take with you.
Lonely Planet Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands (Lonely Planet Travel Survival Kit) by Rob Rachowiecki
In preparation for a visit to Ecuador in 1994 (visiting a friend in Peace Corps), I devoured this book and many others from the library. This is one of two I bought to take with me. It darn near saved my life!
