Utter nonsensical garbage, but well worth ordering (as long as you don't take it seriously) and gets one star only for the hilarious, super metal illustrations. My husband and I get a lot of laughs out of this one.
I have mixed feelings about this book. I'd already read the Bible Teach and God's Love books, and these books are educational, but they were also written by Jehovah's Witnesses, to promote the JW religion. This book is more for the 'advanced' student, one who already has at least a basic understanding of the Bible and how the JW's interpret it.
This book focuses on having a good JW family and how to have your family be more 'godly'. My mixed feelings come from the fact that while there are show more positive aspects of this book, like emphasizing respect for elders and other family members, there is also a kind of 'stick your head in the sand' approach. Women are expected to be subservient to men, and regardless of how this book tries to use 'mild' language for this, the message remains the same - a woman is inferior to the man because Jehovah says so.
Yeah, no. I'm not going to submit to someone just because of what is between their legs/my legs. This book also views things through rose-colored glasses. Divorce is permissible only when one or the other spouse commits adultery. But you're not allowed to divorce an abusive spouse, or one who will offer you/the children no support/respect.
And then there's the disfellowship (shunning) I absolutely understand shunning for terrible crimes - by all means shun rapists, abusers, etc. But one can be shunned simply for leaving the JW faith, even if that person is not actually doing anything harmful or trying to make other people leave the faith. So if you're curious about the JW religion and its literature, read this one with a grain of salt - there's some good, practical advice in here but also some bad/outright harmful ones, along with some pretty blatant sexism. show less

I had the opportunity to study with jehovah's Witnesses. Growing up, I was given an overall negative impression of them from others, and people I know would hide from them. It happened at my house as well. However, when I was approached by one as an young adult, he was very kind and friendly, and I decided to give it a try. Growing up, i was dragged to church (literally) and gained nothing from the experience. Doing a study with the JW's on the other hand was incredibly educational.
And yes, show more this is the book we started out with. This is an excellent primer on the foundations of the JW belief system and how they interpret the Bible and apply it to their lives. I also learned more about the Bible itself, and it encouraged me to study the Bible on my own. Although I do not agree with some of their beliefs/interpretations (i.e. the blood transfusion thing - I see the scripture commanding us to abstain from blood as meaning do not drink/consume it, JW's believe that this prohibition extends to blood transfusions) I can still respect these people because (in my personal experience, anyway) I have been treated with respect from them, and I have respected them back. I found my study time with them educational, entertaining, and enlightening.
This book is a good primer into the belief system and practices of JW's and gives us a better understanding of their religion. The reason this book is titled so, is because all of their beliefs, prohibitions, and goals are based off actual Biblical scripture and it's fun to study that. It gave me more understanding of Christianity than my entire childhood of being dragged to church ever gave.
If you're interested in religion, Christianity, or JW's specifically, I highly recommend this book. It is a quick read (about 100 pages or so?) with some really nice artwork. It is available to read for free at jw.org, or can be given to you/mailed upon request. show less

For all its faults in its organization and some of its beliefs, I will give the Watchtower Organization kudos for being so open about what it takes to be a member of their organization and what they believe in. That's a hella lot more than can be said for certain other organizations, particularly Scientilogy. When I was doing Bible Study with the JW's, they were happy to answer the questions I asked them about how their organization was run and what happened at Bethel and etc.
You might not show more agree with certain tenets of JW belief, but this book helps to clear away some of the misconceptions people have about JW's and it is always nice to be able to better understand a different group. show less
