Andrew R.Howard. Covered Bridges of Connecticut: A Guide. Village Press, (1996), Second edition, Paperback. On a hot longest day of the year in London I read, in a Caffè Nero near Charing Cross, a book acquired from Any amount of books called Covered bridges of Connecticut: a guide by Andrew R.Howard, second edition (Village Press, 1995). There are only three covered bridges left in Connecticut: Bull’s, West Cornwall and Comstock. There are least 10 Covered bridge societies in the USA if show more one goes by the list at the back of the book which also includes black and white photographs of the 3 bridges in Connecticut. The author suggests a number of reasons for their existence: to enable horses and livestock to cross rivers without being frightened, to provide shelter in the case of a storm and to enable couples to kiss while crossing the water. The real reason is to protect the wooden trusses from the environment and rotting. A fascinating account of types of truss is included: Kingpost, Multi-kingpost, Queenpost, Town and Howe. There are even tips of when and how to photographs from the outside and inside.
