Very Catholic, very Victorian. Oddly enough, the unspeakable cruelty depicted here MUST have caused some kind of moral outrage, especially thanks to the skimpy costumes and a hip-swivelling cooch dance with distinctly lesbian overtones. Piety and Paganism are in direct opposition here and although the text is on the side of the angels it must have been astutely aware of the box office potential of depravity and debauchery. What should really concern an objective reader is how well-written show more the play is and how well it has held up over more than a century. show less
