Excellent graphic novel. The meeting of Vargas' twisted, yet endearing storytelling with a dark, hard edges graphic style worked. Both artists gave their best and the result was a dark, yet tender tale of murder, insanity and family. The most striking images for me were of the father's "quatre fleuves" sculpture. The father working daily on this work of recycling art, his whole family (4 sons) working to keep him, I guess, sane in a hard world. I loved this. It's a quick read but a powerful show more one. A fairly mild comic book artist autobiography, but I was intrigued by the dynamic between the creator and his brother and liked the focus on childhood imagination feeding into adult creativity. Pages 72-75 stood out for me as the artist documents the moment he saw past the constraints of line drawing and started to view the world and how to illustrate it in an entirely different way.

El historietista e ilustrador francés Edmond Baudoin coge el pincel para narrar e ilustrar en vigoroso blanco y negro (con algunos destellos de color) la agitada vida de Salvador Dalí. En esta nueva manifestación de lo que es capaz la pictoliteratura aplicada a la biografía precisamente de un pintor, es otro pintor --pues la expresión gráfica de Baudoin es pintura-- quien ofrece al lector con rigor y acierto visual una mirada íntima sobre la evolución de Dalí como hombre, artista y show more personaje mediático. Baudoin reinterpreta con frecuencia las imágenes e ideas dalinianas y recurre al entorno familiar y de amistades del artista figuerense para redondear su perspectiva particular de Dalí. Son varios los narradores que intervienen en el relato. Si bien no se descubre ninguna anécdota, tampoco se pasan por alto las relaciones difíciles con el padre y la hermana de Dalí ni la tormentosa amistad con García Lorca y Buñuel. En gran medida el enfoque es un acierto de composición y desarrollo tanto de personas como de paisajes y circunstancias. Tan solo en un caso se le escapa al historietista un detalle: mientras la ilustración recoge una vista de Cadaqués y de su playa, el texto del "bocadillo" correspondiente se refiere a Figueres. La traducción del francés corre a cargo de Ana Sánchez Rodríguez y es excelente. El libro incluye un apéndice de texto con amplios datos sobre la vida de Dalí (1904-1989), su obra artística y una bibliografía. Muy recomendable para todo aquel interesado en Dalí y también en el apabullante progreso de la pictoliteratura. show less

A couper le souffle ! Je me suis régalé à la lecture de ce livre bouleversant, racontant l'histoire d'un personnage ayant littéralement la tête ailleurs. Celle-ci se transforme en mouette, en bruits, en femmes... Peu importe : sa seule vocation semble être de voyager dans un monde représenté comme étant terriblement figé. Vraiment une très belle oeuvre.
