Barely Awake
By D.R. Perry

I was lucky enough to win a copy from the author.

I am a paperback girl and it takes me a little longer to read eBook versions of any novel. I am sorry I waited so long before sitting down and reading Barely Awake in one session.

This Novella is a romantic paranormal comedy which takes place in a college setting. There are two main characters and the book shifts between their points of view in such a natural way that it adds to the enjoyment of the story line.

The show more main female character is a misunderstood young woman looking for someway to connect with other people. The main male character is a bear-shifter who can't seem to stay awake long enough to pass his courses because of his bear's hibernation urges. The two are thrown together at the beginning of the novel as tutor and student. The romance part of this novella particularly enjoyable, as it is beautifully written without being overbearing.

D.R. Perry's style has just the right amount of emotion to make you laugh, sigh, and keep the pages turning. My only complaint was that the book isn't longer. I will be purchasing the paperback form for my personal library and look forward to the rest of the series.

I would recommend Barely Awake with the highest rating possible to anyone who enjoys paranormal characters, especially shifters outside of the norm and to anyone who enjoys a heartwarming romance.

If I could give more than 5 stars I would.

For all it was an introductory novella, there wasn't much introducing. I felt like the author started halfway through the story. Normally, this works, draws the reader in - but the backstory was never really explained and it was like missing half the story. I didn't really like Lynn. She was kind of a bitch. Unnecessarily a bitch. Snark is cool. But she assumes everyone she meets hates her and is going to bully her and I don't really get why. This only happens when she provokes them. And she show more never really apologizes. Bobby was alright. Seemed nice enough. This sounds like a really interesting world and a fairly original concept, but it needs to be fleshed out and conveyed to the reader. This was a very simplistic novella - quick read, okay plot - great world-building. Works perfectly if you suspend all questions and just let it go. There was a mystery but you never find out who or what or where or why it all happens - just that it does. Apparently that's addressed in the rest of the series. show less
Fun and intriguing story read in one evening. The private college in New England centers around parahumans but does have ordinary human students as well. The insecure nerd girl from Wisconsin has to tutor the hunky bear shifter from Louisiana who responds to the snowstorms by nearly going into hibernation right before exams. There are a lot of interesting fellow students and it is definitely an interesting and twisty plot. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
Another fantastic installment of Providence Paranormal College and the plot is thickening. I love this series and plan on picking books up signed by the author at one of her events.

Fred might just be one my favourite character to date. There is still a lot more to come, though. I feel as if this is a turning point for the series plot and I'm looking forward to seeing where Perry takes us in the remaining installments.

I still have a few issues keeping the King and Queen realms separate, but show more that might just be me. show less
