This book is like reading one of those disaster movies converted to a book. One where there's a giant cast and they keep jumping from group to group until all the survivors end up together type. It has an . . . interesting premise of aliens trying to save humanity from a meteor crashing into the planet as directed by other aliens, but humans are too stupid and screwing it up . Just based on the way the writing was done, the book has no choice but to turn into one of those end of the world show more becomes dystopian becomes portal with alien type books.
There's a lot of moving pieces to this story, that you almost need a notepad to keep track of who is who. And of course, we have to read through all this crap of the various points of view only to have all but two die by the book's end. Honestly, I wanted a few to die sooner, but a few didn't deserve to die in the manner that they did.
There are ways that it might have been better. Eliminating a few points of view, removing some asides. Focus the book more. Definitely not drawn to read the next book in the series, show less

I read a lot. That being said, it isn't often I'm so drawn into a story that I don't want to put it down. Earth Song: Overture is one of those books. Mr. Wandrey vividly describes his characters and settings, pulling the reader into his story. The book begins with a bang, rapidly gains momentum and ends explosively. There are many more books in this series, and I can't wait to find out where Mr. Wandrey takes us. If you are one of those readers who can't put a book down without reading 'just show more one more chapter', you'll thoroughly enjoy Earth Song: Overture. show less
Cartwright's Cavaliers
The Revelations Cycle, Book 1
By: Mark Wandrey
Narrated by: Craig Good
This is a really good science fiction book I hope is a series. The main character is a chubby guy which makes me like him right away! He is not the muscle bound guy that is the typical hero but the hero's son that looks like a disappointment to everyone. We follow him as he grows in confidence, he already has a lot of skills, as he takes over a dying enterprise. The characters are unique and people that show more would be great to be on a mission with! It is a excellent story with plenty of exciting things to keep the reader/listener entertained. Will look for book two!
The narrator was awesome and easy performed all the voices and there are some strange ones to make! Great job! show less

This is the author's first novel. I enjoyed it, but the enjoyment was tempered by 'typos' in almost every other sentence. It was very distracting and hard to imagine it getting published that way. It is the first novel in what is to be a series and I will read the next one. Earth is destroyed by a meteor guided by an unknown alien intelligence. 10 Portals appear on earth. Each of these will allow 144 people to step through to another world that has been created for earthlings. The novel ends show more with the destruction of earth and the beginnings of a new world for earthlings. show less
