Whew, this brought me back to those good ol' Wattpad days! This one was interesting because it had a lot common tropes, but it somehow feels a bit more...serious, with drugs, death, etc. The romance is just good fun, with a dash of guilty-pleasure toxicity.

The one thing that consistently gave me the ick though, was the Lydia/Graham plot; I know it's emphasized that they met ahead of the school/teacher dynamic but it just doesn't sit right with me still, and it feels weird that it seems like show more we're expected to root for them.

With all that being said, I admit that the show gave me a bit more buzz than the book did, partly because the tension felt much more palpable. And thank GOD they ended season 1 before getting to THAT scene — this book's ending is kind of a downer, so make sure you've got the next one ready to go. show less

This one does one big thing right — the relationship between James and Ruby. The conflicts are frustrating but at least they develop well and learn to communicate.

On the other hand, there are a lot of subplots that I found not that interesting, like Wren/Ember. It also doubles down on Lydia/Graham, which I still can't get on board with.

Perhaps the biggest issue is the pacing, though. While the main conflict with Mortimer is ultimately tied up in a neat little bow, the resolution is show more suggested at the 90% mark and the book just speedruns it until the end. It would've been nicer to see it spread out through the novel, with different characters getting involved in it.

Ultimately, the series is what you'd expect and I had a good time reading it. Excited to see how the TV series approaches it. show less

Anfangs dachte ich, dass ich für dieses Buch nicht die richtige Zielgruppe bin. Da mich das Leben von Eliteschulen/-universitäten, Reichtum und Luxus recht wenig interessiert. Auch die First World Problems der selbsternannten Elite sind mir recht egal, da sie aus meinem Blickwinkel total verschoben sind. Bin dann aber dem Hype erlegen und hab mir das Buch trotz aller Zweifel zugelegt.



Meinung

Aufgrund von Mona Kastens Schreibstil konnte ich ohne Probleme in show more die Geschichte eintauchen und mich von ihr in den Bann ziehen lassen. Die Autorin konnte die beiden Hauptcharaktere sehr realistisch darstellen. Ruby ist mir sofort mit ihrer gesamten Art ans Herz gewachsen. James, nun ja, ich kann diesen reichen Schnöseln einfach nichts verzeihen. Ganz besonders nicht dann, wenn sie sich immer als Opfer sehen und mit ihrem Verhalten andere so erniedrigen.

Es ist vollkommen egal, wie hoch der Druck von Innen und Außen zu sein scheint, ist dies einfach keine Entschuldigung, dass sich James anfangs wie ein riesiger Mistkerl benimmt und leider auch am Ende des Buches. Ich denke, diese Art Drama ist es, dich mich so von New/Young Adult Büchern abschreckt. Es ist einfach too much und meines Erachtens auch total unrealistisch. Klar, es ist Fiktion. Aber eben gerade bei Contemporary Fiction sollte irgendwo ein Funke dramaturgische Realität gewahrt werden.

Rubys Charakter und Mona Kastens flüssiger Schreibstil konnten das Buch für mich retten und mich auch neugierig auf mehr machen.

Fazit

Save Me ist ein typischer New Adult Roman, wie ich es befürchtet habe und doch hat es die Autorin geschafft mich so weit anzufixen, dass ich jetzt wissen möchte, wie es weitergeht. Ergo die Fortsetzung wird es definitiv in mein Bücherregal schaffen und ich hoffe wirklich (Crossing Fingers), dass die Geschichte besser und dramaturgisch etwas realistischer wird.
