The Elizabeth Papers is both a gentle romance set in modern day London and Derbyshire and an intriguing mystery that takes us back in time to the early 19th century. The name Mr Darcy instantly indicates that the Elizabeth of the title is Elizabeth Bennett of Pride and Prejudice, but don’t dismiss this novel as a parody or bandwagon follow up. The plot is original and the modern characters, private detective, Charlie Haywood and talented young artist Evie Pemberton, are distinctive and show more well developed. Their relationship has parallels with that of Elizabeth and Darcy but their adventure leads them into different avenues.
It took me a while to feel at home with the characters of Elizabeth and Darcy, but then time has passed and they have been married for several years, so of course their relationship would have changed somewhat. The issues raised in Pride and Prejudice still cause problems but with a very different outcome. Although you don’t need to have intimate knowledge of that book, it certainly enhances your enjoyment of this novel if you do. show less

Not a fan of the idea of Darcy taking advantage of his wife, who was forced to marry him. The Austenesque compromise/forced marriage trope is fun, but I enjoy it much more when Darcy does not force himself on his wife and continues to work for her affection. That said, there are some sexy parts, which is fun, but reader discretion is advised.

In this Pride and Prejudice variation, at the Netherfield Ball Mrs. Bennet states that Darcy has compromised Elizabeth and they must marry.
In a loveless marriage can these 2 people every have happiness?
A very minor point - I felt as Mrs. Darcy, Elizabeth was too complacent with Miss Bingley calling her Eliza.
Really enjoyed this story read it in one sitting staying up late to finish.

I had this as a Kindle loan and I have always enjoyed continuations of Elizabeth and Darcy's story. This was no exception. It is set in their time and with descendants in our time. I preferred the 1800's part.
