IRIN

IRIN is a news agency focusing on humanitarian issues in under-represented parts of the world. It was founded in 1995 by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) following the 1994 Rwandan genocide that precipitated a refugee crisis in the Great Lakes region of Africa. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, IRIN has several regional news bureaus and liaison offices. In 2001 IRIN created PlusNews to focus on coverage of HIV/AIDS. In January 2015 IRIN became completely independent of the United Nations. Most of its coverage is in English, followed by French and Arabic.
