- Short biography
- Donald Howarth was an influential British playwright and director closely tied to the post-war theatrical revolution at London's Royal Court Theatre. Educated at the Esme Church Northern Theatre School, his career expanded from acting to playwriting with breakthroughs like Sugar in the Morning (1959). He received the Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright and spent substantial parts of his later career directing in South Africa, notably at the Space Theatre in Cape Town. Howarth was an openly gay man, and his identity directly influenced his creative direction, casting choices, and subversion of mid-century sexual politics on stage.
