This is maybe more for grown-ups? Or for older kids (mid- to upper elementary) who are interested in all of the aspects of building an eco-house, from the foundation (literally) to the solar panels and "green" roof. It's very thorough, describing the hows and whys of the process from the ground up, including plumbing, electricity, and insulation. The language is clear and specific, and the architect in charge of the project is a brown-skinned woman named Masha. The family appears to be mixed show more race: the father has brown skin, the mom looks white, and the three kids have varying skin tones.

I would have liked to see more back matter (there's only a glossary), particularly selected sources, and some kind of acknowledgment about the privilege inherent in being able to choose to build the exact house you want.

The Mellons Build a House is a hugely enjoyable picturebook that takes the reader step-by-step through house design and build. Heat pumps, solar panels, insulation and rainwater harvesting are all clearly explained and brought to life in Nik Neves’s warm, inclusive illustrations. A timely and essential read for aspiring young architects and construction-enthusiasts.
Accessible enough for an older elementary school student, but informative enough to be interesting to an adult. The sections that discuss common features across flags (crosses, suns, diagonals, etc.) are particularly well written. Overall, a excellent introduction to flags and vexillolgy.
This is a fantastic book for young and old alike to enjoy and share! It begins with a section answering the questions of what is a mountain, what words are used to describe it, what is involved in exploration, dangers, and the gear needed. Next are chapters dedicated to detailed natural and human history as well as important facts about several famous mountains: Mt. Everest in Nepal/Tibet, The Matterhorn in Italy, Mt. Fuji in Japan, Chimborazo in Ecuador, Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Denali in show more Alaska, Puncak Jaya in Indonesia, and Vinson Massif in Antarctica. There is also a glossary at the end.
The illustrations by Ed J Brown are detailed, colorful, representative, and clearly reflect all the work that went into creating this book.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of ANY age (not only 8 to 12) including ESL, and great for gifting to everyone, but especially to a school or your local public library!
