Abstract
This project explored the importance of preserving cultural integrity when arranging folk music
into band pieces. Using examples from Korean, English, and Brazilian traditions, it emphasized
the need to maintain authentic sounds and stylistic nuances. Preserving these elements not only
respects the cultural heritage of the source material, but also enriches cross-cultural
understanding and appreciation within the music classroom. The literature review explored key
aspects of band music show more arranging, including instrumental levels, cultural responsibilities,
arrangement benchmarks, copyright considerations, authentic instrumentation, historical
contextualization, and stylistic choices. Based on a parent and staff survey, folk songs were
chosen to be arranged for the beginning to intermediate level instrumental students at an
international school in Seoul, South Korea. Arranging involved translating a composer's vision
into cohesive ensemble performances, respecting cultural authenticity and innovation. It
addressed grading levels to suit ensemble proficiency, cultural sensitivity in adapting diverse
music, and ethical considerations in copyright. Authentic instrumentation preserved musical
integrity and enhanced cultural connection, providing an enjoyable experience for the students. show less
