Charles Beddington

Read over a long period, with several visits to Venice allowing enjoyable mental comparison of current views with those painted nearly three centuries ago. Each plate of the paintings is generously supplemented by one or more details, often shown over a two page spread, as well as copies of prints or alternate versions by Canaletto, Belloto or copyists.
The endpapers show maps of Venice annotated with the viewpoints of the twenty five paintings illustrated from Woburn, which aid ease of show more recollection.
I found Beddington’s notes on the paintings factually interesting, but dry, having also read Links’ Venice for Pleasure, which is a superlative companion and includes some smaller Canaletto illustration. show less
