Laid back as the residents of Euganean Hills environment may be, nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to blow-in, and investigative journalist, Riccardo Ranieri who has tense, nervous and put-upon down pat.

Starting out reading MURDER ON THE 18TH GREEN, there is the distinct possibility that Ranieri is going to annoy some readers. He’s an odd sort of combination of ego and vulnerability, sincerity and glibness that makes him very hard to pick in the beginning. It doesn’t show more hurt that for a man who, on moving to this country location, has availed himself of the companionship of two beautiful German Shepherds who he obviously loves. It doesn’t help that his attitude towards their care and feeding seems somewhat haphazard, even allowing for the difficult circumstances Ranieri finds himself in, what with being the man who discovers a friends body, getting shot, finding himself investigating the death, and his own shooting, annoying his neighbours, the police, and half the golf club members along the way. None of which seems to bother him a bit, until it starts to bother him a lot. Needless to say he’s a wonderfully frustrating character and endlessly fascinating. Which is just as well as he’s also just about the entire focus of this novel, although there are some standout cameos from his police bodyguard and others.

There’s such a strong sense of culture and attitude about this novel, that is sweetened all the more by a dry and understated sense of humour. Readers that get that a large percentage of Ranieri’s ego is tempered beautifully with his own ability to poke fun at himself will find him engaging. The plot for the novel is also nicely played out, although to be honest, the ultimate killer might not be that hard to pick, but the machinations along the way are well worth following. This is a lot more about why than necessarily who or how.

Often funny, very engaging, MURDER ON THE 18TH GREEN is well worth a look, although, it might make you think twice about a sauna after a round of golf.

Molto bello, mi è piaciuto veramente tanto.
Un nuovo personaggio che va ad infoltire la schiera dei miei detective letterari preferiti, Riccardo Ranieri, cronista del Mattino di Padova e appassionato giocatore di golf, un quarantenne simpatico, ironico e tanto distratto, perditore seriale di cellulari.
L’omicidio del compagno con cui gioca a golf e della moglie è l’avvio di questa prima vicenda che lo vede protagonista e che si rivelerà ben più complessa di quanto appare show more inizialmente.
Una storia ben costruita, narrata in uno stile scorrevole, ironico e divertente, una lettura molto piacevole che coinvolge, appassiona e che mi ha lasciato complessivamente molto soddisfatta.
Una serie che continuerò sicuramente a leggere. show less

Continuano le vicende del giornalista Riccardo Ranieri che questa volta si trova coinvolto in un caso piuttosto intricato che lo porterà insieme alla sua compagna, la procuratrice Giulia Dal Nero, sino ad Istanbul.
Una vicenda articolata che si intreccia con sostanziali cambiamenti nella vita del simpatico e sbadato protagonista che si troverà ancora una volta, suo malgrado, nel mirino di persone prive di qualsiasi scrupolo tanto da rimetterci quasi la vita.
Uno stile brillante ed show more accattivante, estremamente scorrevole accompagna molto piacevolmente la lettura di questo caso costruito con attenzione anche se già prima della fine ne avevo intuito la soluzione.
Una serie brillante e coinvolgente che mi ha definitivamente conquistato e che, libro dopo libro, si conferma tra le mie preferite. show less

Questa volta il giornalista Riccardo Ranieri si trova coinvolto in una serie di efferati e terribili crimini che hanno come filo conduttore terzine dantesche con cui l’assassino preannuncia e firma i suoi delitti. Cosa si nasconde dietro i versi e cosa spinge questo criminale a commettere questi orribili reati?
Un’altra storia avvincente e appassionante per questo giornalista quarantenne, simpatico, ironico e, soprattutto, sbadato perditore seriale di cellulari. Accanto l’affascinante e show more suscettibile procuratore Giulia Dal Nero che ha conquistato il cuore di Riccardo.
Una lettura estremamente scorrevole, appassionante, simpatica e anche divertente, una vicenda ben costruita (anche se questa volta ho individuato il colpevole ben prima della fine) che coinvolge e invoglia ad andare avanti senza interrompersi sino all’ultima pagina del libro. show less
