I spent 10 days in Barcelona in December of 1975, about 3 weeks after the death of dictator Francisco Franco and remember it as a beautiful city at a time of great confusion and much hope for a more liberal attitude from the Spanish government towards the Catalan people and culture. I have not really followed what has happened in Catalonia since that time and so was fascinated to read Matthew Tree's book, "Barcelona, Catalonia." The book is a collection of newspaper columns and essays, show more primarilly discussing the distinct Catalan culture and language and the ongoing movement for Catalonia to become an independent nation.
In his writing Tree explores the differnece between Spain and Catalonia and discusses the ongoing discrimination against the Catalan language and culture by the Spanish government. I enjoyed it tremendously and would recommend it to anyone interested in contemporary politics.
I received this book as a First Reads from Goodreads.

A collection of pieces by Matthew Tree, a British writer who moved to Barcelona many years ago and has gone thoroughly native, being now more pro-independence than a large proportion of the Catalan population. The essays are a mixture of personal reflection on age and relationships, advocacy for the Catalan cause, advocacy of Catalan literature, and restaurant reviews. It's fronted by a strong piece on the independence issue, but the rest is fairly show more light. show less
