I picked this book up because of its beautiful illustrations which include the life under the soil level (e.g. worms, microorganisms, hibernating hedgehogs)as well as plants and animals above. While this book is written about England, so some species will not be familiar to American readers, the principles of adaptation to winter's cold are engagingly presented in a manner accessible to all.
