Richard Muir was born in a Yorkshire village, and worked for a time on the local newspaper before taking First Class Honours in Geography and received his Ph.D. from Aberdeen University. He now lives and writes in the village of Great Shelford near Cambridge, in a region that has been unusually well studied through field archaeology, local history, and the recorded reminiscences of generations of villagers.
